Three questions about a 1957 Ford 640
1. Tractor has been converted to 12 volt. Will an original amp. meter work properly?
2. Tractor has an oil leak between rear of engine and transmission. My guess is rear main seal. Does tractor have to be split in half to repair?
3. What is a 640 in good condition worth?
My dad bought the tractor new in 1957. I bought it back from the fourth owner recently.
Thanks
Gary

One problem you might have with an ammeter is that most of them were designed to handle lots less amps than a modern alternator can put out. If your battery is really low and the alternator is putting out maximum output, you may fry you ammeter, or at least get it real hot.

Make sure your breathers on the rocker cover and oil filler are clean. If not they may pressurize the engine too much and force oil out the rear main seal and maybe the front seal. I would sure try a new pan gasket with sealer before I redid the rear main seal. According to what I have read, it is possible to put in the neoprene seal with the crankshaft in and presumably you can do it without splitting. Is the oil coming out by the back of the pan or out the hole in the bottom of the clutch area of the transmission case?

As far as value goes, are you really considering selling your Dad's old tractor, now that you have tracked it down? Some things are worth a lot more to a person for sentimental value than they ever would sell for on the open market. I doubt that I will ever sell my Dad's last tractor and am a little mad at my brother for not giving me first crack at it when he sold Dad's tractor that we had when I was a kid.

IM not sure if you can change the rear main with out splitting the engine and tranny. I know you should be able to drop the oil pan and the rear main and change the lower part of the original old style oil seal but the upper could be tricky if even possible. Your amp gauge should show a positive number if your alternator is charging but it wont be the correct voltage reading.I just sold my 1954 640 Ford . It was 85% to 90% restored to original, with new paint , 12 volt, new front tires , exhaust, gauges,P.T.O. shaft, and more ,ran and looked very good. I sold it for $3800.00. But I guess it has a lot to do in where your located also. Hope this helps you out. Craig..
