I'm looking for a tractor to do some mowing with (I recently bought 12 acres of which about 5 is pasture).. Tonight I'm going to look at a 1940 9n with a bush hog (asking price is $2250)..I stopped by this morning on my way to work and gave it a quick look see...paint was ok (relatively fresh), tires ok...lots of oil on the underside....Is there anything I should pay particular attention to?.. I'm new to the tractor game and am looking for some advice...

In my area that isn't a bad price if the tractor is ok and the bush hog deck isn't too rusted, etc. You already looked at tires. Make sure it doesn't smoke out breather or exhaust very much if any, steering is good and not too loose, clutch ok, doesn't jump out of gears, charges ok, oil pressure at warm idle ok, hydraulics come all way up and are smooth, starter engages and works ok, sheet metal ok and not rusted thru (new paint might hide something). That's a quick list.

Fresh Paint and Fresh Oil?? That should tell you something right there!! Paint is a cheap way to keep your eyes off what is wrong with it. I would walk for that price. I would rather get a rusty one with out leaks and problems and paint it myself. Mark H.
