Black smoke points to fuel. Is the float level correct and does the needle valve shut off fuel like it should. This realy sounds like a fuel problem.

carb!!! carb!!! carb!!! your carb is running to rich thats why it putt black smoke under a load. rpm changes when there a slight load on the machine. but when the buterfly is at certain postiion that dosnt mean that the engine is gona stay at the same rpm position as iot would with out a load. Example: If you butterfly is WIDE open with no load and runningm 2400 rpm, and then your butterfly is STILL WIDE OPEN under a load, the its dumping thwe same amount of fuel but now runnnign more like 2150 or 2200 compared to 2400. So the engine starts to flood becasue when its rich it dossnt ahve the proper amount of oxygen and has too much FUEL! back out on your idle AIR screw a hair at a time and see how that works.

My idle air screw seems to have no effect on performance...I can close it and the engine still runs..no roll as the carb ajustment calls for? Any ideas...

If the idle air screw doesn't effect the rpm then there is too much fuel getting by somewhere. Most likely culprit is the float level being set too high. If you run the idle air screw all of the way in it should choke the motor down - applying a little choke at the same time will keep the motor running but only under no load. If it doesn't do this then there is fuel getting by where it shouldn't. Hope this helps.

I would check the timing gear the one on the cam. the center hub would slip a little and put the tractor out of time . jwb

I'd check the gap on the points. I think it should be .025. I've seen the points set wrong act very similar. Also if the dist shaft is loose enough the point setting may not be the same when it's running as when it's not.

Check the simple stuff first! REM
