The red and grey I purchased at New Holland/ Ford
in the last year were Alkyd paints. Don't know if
hardeners are available for alkyds. The blue is acrylic.
All above info is from quart cans.

I have used 1985 Chevy red, unsure of the exact paint number, but it was Dupont paint. I'm sure if you research this, you can find the exact numbers. I, too, am planning on painting my 641, but probably in the Fall after I've sealed any and all leaks. I've got the tractor separated right now, and am in the process of rebuilding and replacing all manner of parts on the thing.

I used the Dupont paint on a 1950 8N a few years ago, and was a very high quality paint. Others have used this 'Chevy' paint for Ford tractors, with very good results. It's a bit more costly, but is higher quality as well. The paint store can tell you exactly what quantities of paint-reducer-hardener to use.

Like Timk said, it's very important to prepare the metal correctly. Get all grime/grease off the tractor first. You can also get Napa rust extend (rust converter) to convert any rust to primer on the tractor, then prime the tractor (preferably with a high quality sandable primer/reducer combo delivered via your spray gun) then wet-sand it down to the desired smoothness. Reapply if necessary to build up low areas or rough spots, then sand smooth. Use a tack cloth to remove all traces of loose particles. After you're done, paint away. Spray cans work okay, but not nearly as good as a high quality paint-reducer-hardener delivered via spray gun. After it's painted, give it plenty of time to cure before use, so you don't smudge or peel off any of the paint. Good luck...

I can tell from the questions you are asking that you haven't done much automotive type painting before. You just don't "start painting". Before you even crack the can open, get more information about surface preparation, either on the internet or buy a book. Preparation is 75% of a good paint job, and, in fact, takes up most of the time; without it, it's a possible disaster. Also, follow the directions on the can religously, and like the other post said, I too would use enamel with a compatible hardner. My $.02

I used Ford paint on my 600 and was very satisfied with the results. The rattle cans matched the quarts almost perfectly. You do need to use thinner and hardner.

What kind of hardner did you use with the Ford paint?
