I need to replace input shaft of trans, and clutch disc for torque limiter. Prices for shaft $1300.00 - $1500.00 for disc $400.00. I think I can convert to 4 or 6 speed for less than $2800.00 and no longer have the s-o-s headache!Would value any thoughts or opinions.

I have a '64 4000 3cyl dsl; was SOS, I converted to 4 spd man w/H-L, encountered no great problems. SOS failed; I dismantled it & found a gear cluster housing broken and complexity that scared me, so I converted. I found a complete 3cyl gas entire drive train (very lucky find!). But for conversion, flywheel had to be changed (no torque limiting clutch in man trans),an exterior hyd pump (LH side driven off flywheel) not req'd for man; otherwise pretty straightforward. If you're interested, I have surplus parts from changeover, ie SOS input shaft, torque limit disc, etc., I'd like to get rid of (at much less cost than you mention). Good Luck!

Brad; Had a similar situation a few years ago, had a very nice 850, w/SOS, Loader, PS. a real cherry!! Had paid $3750 for it, and the tranny was having "PUPS" quote was about $3500. to put in a 5 speed, now I would have over $7000 in it, and a tractor that was over 40 years old! you don't have to be a "rocket scientist" to see that's "crazy", took it to the auction and let some other guy figure it out, in fact I made money on it.

Hi VAN, First an 850 was built 1954-1957 and was a Five speed non-live pto, and the S.O.S. Came out in 1959 on the 01 series tractors and would have been a 811 , 871 , or an 881 . Whoever looked at it for you didn't want the job or knew nothing about S.O.S. 's . What's wrong with having $7000 in a 40 year old tractor , most of the newer smaller Jap tractors are for sale more than $7000 and can't do half the work of the older tractors . $7000 does not buy much these days when you start looking at newer models . Opinions are fine if they are accurate. Thanks Tony Jacobs

The last time I asked a 4-speed was $1000 for the swap setup and a 5-speed was $1200, then you have to install it. This is for Hundred Series tractors - don't know about Thousand Series. The 4-speed first is a faster gearing than the 5-speed but 5-speeds are getting hard to find parts for. I prefer the SOS versatility and speed variation over a non-hi-lo manual trans. If you can find a six or eight-speed that will fit you will probably have about the same money as fixing the SOS. Your money, your decision. Good luck either way.

I'm not sure if you can slip the double clutch 5 speed in, the rearend may be different, but if you can I would do it. The one thing they did get right on the SelectoSpeed was the name SOS or HELP.

I don't know about the tractor you have, but you can't interchange the transmissions on the 5000. Something to do with the PTO.

Most input shaft spines are wore thin, just a new disc with never seize on the splines will last a long time, using the inching pedal when shifting will help also.

The S-O-S transmission is not a headache, you just have to take proper care of them. I think it is a better transmission than a 4 or 5 speed, but that is just a young displaced farmboy's opinion.

This last winter I had to rebuild the transmission on my 971. I needed a seal kit, main shaft, input shaft and torque limiting clucth. You can get input shafts that are rebuilt. I got mine from a used parts place (Worthington Tractor Salvage, Worthington MN) for $125 exchanged. Check some local salvage yards or talk to some machine shops. I had a machine shop lined up that would do it, but I found the salvaged part that was cheaper. While you have it apart put a seal kit in it. You can get them from most Ford dealerships. I did the overhaul myself for around $1200. That was including the main shaft that I also got from the same salvage yard.

Good luck in what you decide.
