I have a 3000 gas that I need to convert to a higher amp alternator in order to run a Ford 354 air planter. I bought the Tisco kit (number 6X10300ALTH), but am having trouble installing it. Has anyone else out there done this successfully? I have several problems/questions and Tisco has no customer service info with this product! My understanding was that everything I need was supposed to be included in the kit. Do I have the wrong kit????

1. The instructions say to connect wires A,B&B from the regulator (There is none labled A)
2. The belt from the old generator is too small to fit around the new alternator. No belt was included. What belt would I use?
3. The tach drive came out of the old generator at a 90 degree angle (up). the new alternator tach drive comes straight out, which means it would need to go straight into the exhaust manifold.
4. I can't find any place to mount the belt tensioning arm where it doesn't interfere with the fan fins on the alternator.
5. In order to fasten the new alternator to the new mounting bracket, I need a different bolt and also a bushing. (neither were included).

I don't like the feeling of Tisco selling kits that down't really fit and that don't come with all the parts, so part of me tells me to send it back to them, but I really need the tractor running since its planting time, so I decided to keep it and use my own "farmer engineering" to make it work.
For anyone else who might be trying this conversion:
1. From the drawing that came with the kit, I figured out that splicing wires A,B&B from the old regulator should be connecting D,B&B (there is no A).
2. I measured what size belt I needed (with a piece of bailer twine) and got one that fits from Napa.
3. The tach cable fits around beside the exhaust manifold. It will probably get too hot, which will shorten the cable life, but it works... Also, it does rotate the correct direction!
4. I "customized" the tension adjusting arm to make it work using the old adjusting arm and one of the adjusting arms that came with the kit. I don't like it, but it works.
5. I also had to supply a new mounting bolt and a bushing.

So, I ended up needing about $20 of additional parts to mount the new kit. The only thing I have found is that the fuel gauge doesn't work now (it used to work, but would only go up to 1/4 tank when full). I plan to do some figuring to see if I can get it to work, too. Thanks to all who gave me advice on this!

Jason:

I'vr installed three of Tisco's alt. conversion kits on my thousand-series tractors (including a 3000 like yours. You're right that the instructions aren't very clear, but I found the install straightforward.

There are two ways the mounting brackets can be installed, but the only bolt you should need to change is the long bolt holding the two parts of the new bracket together, and it's included in the kit.

Take your old belt, pull it around the pulleys, and measure the gap. Take that measurement and your old belt to Napa or any parts house, and they'll find the new belt for you.

The Tisco kit is the only kit that has the alt. proofmeter drive on it - it spins correctly for your application (it ain't backwards) - it fits close to the manifold, but it will still work.

Good luck - these really are good conversion kits.

If I can help further, or e-mail you pics of my conversions, let me know.

To add to your misery, I don't think the tach on the instrument panel, which is designed for a generator, will work with your alternator inasmuch as the tach drives turn spin in different directions. Check it out by observing how the tach cable turns on each one when you turn the pulley.

Does this mean that you have had similar experiences with the Tisco kit? Were you able to find something that worked? I am thinking of returning the Tisco kit and getting an alternator through NAPA. Tisco needs to know that their kits don't fit!

No. I was discouraged from going to an alternator when I found out I would have to get another instrument panel so the tach would work. Sorry can't help more.
