Bought a 68 3000 that has some smoke coming out of the valve cover ventilation tube. Just wondering if the is normal, if not, what would cause this.

Hey Barry, the smoke your seeing is called blow-by all engines have a certain amount, but as the engine gets worn some it gets to be enough to where you can readily see it, the cause of it is compression leaking by the piston rings, as long as the tractor has enough power to do your job, and it starts easily enough, and it dont create so much smoke that you cant see where your goin I would run it and not worry.

Is it diesel or gas? What color smoke? Look for signs of moister in the valve cover.

Its diesel and no moisture in the valve cover. The smoke is a greyish color and has the odor of diesel.

If it smells like diesel you could be looking at a stuck injector putting too much fuel in the cylinder, washing down the cylinder wall, and getting diesel in the oil. Washing down the cylinder wall takes the oil off of the wall and causes rapid ring wear, thereby exacerbating the problem (vicious circle kind of problem).

Could also be that rings are worn and it is just blow-by that you are smelling.

Check the oil for thinning and smell of fuel. If it is diesel getting in the oil the probem needs to be found quick or risk alot of internal problems (expensive). Good luck, hope it is nothing major.

It depends How much smoke you are seeing.
If it is a constant amount worn piston rings
would be indicated. this can be confirmed with a compression chek. There may be other causes this is the only one that I can come up with at the moment.
