2000 won't lift

I have a 1963 four cylinder gas 2000. The hydraulics will not lift when the selector lever is in the down (constant draft)position. I opened the inspection cover where the PTO lever is. I see the shaft at the bottom that is moved by the PTO lever. Above that is what appears to be the main drive shaft to the differential. Above that and somewhat behind it is a lever that is moved by the touch control lever. It moves toward the front of the tractor when the touch control lever is in the lift position. The length of this unit can be adjusted by a long nut and a jam nut. The IT manual says check the gap between the control valve land and the machined surface of valve housing, using a Nuday tool No. NCA 502. My questions - which is the gap that is to be adjusted? and, since I have no such tool, what should the gap be?

I had to adjust my lift on the 841 because it wasn't coming up all the way. I have the IT manual and to see the components better I took the lift off the tractor and mounted it in a vise as instructed in manual. Without the specialty tool to measure the gap, my manual gave the gap measurements. A very small tolerance for this gap is recommended and that tool would have been nice, but I decided to go with a very fine steel ruler, made the adjustments, installed the lift and alls working fine. I think a dial caliper with the correct sensitivity would work also, with adjustments being done off the tractor. Good luck.

I guess that it won't lift when an implement is working. I think most draft controls just flop when the tractor is stopped unless draft control lever is in the transport position. Special tools from NH are very expensive. I guess they're intended for dealers only.
