My 860 starts and runs but...

after about forty five minutes of mowing, it loses all power, and as I limp back to the garage, it alternately sputters for a few seconds, then races for a few seconds, then sputters, then races, etc. After it sits long enough to cool down, it will start right back up as before, then the process repeats. Any ideas about what is going on would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

I had this problem with my 4000 diesel. Didn't notice a problem at low RPMs, but when mowing, at PTO speed, I had the problem. It turned out to be my air filter, even though it is an oil bath. I believe you have the same oil bath air filter on the gas model. Once I cleaned it out and refilled with new oil, no more problems.

Thanks, Bob - I'll look into this next time I fire it up!

As stated previously, check that you are getting fuel. I recently repaired an 8N with a similiar problem. It turned out to be the fuel bowl was not sealing and would allow air into the fuel line. This is easy to check. With the tractor running and a flashlight if needed look into the fuel bowl through the glass while the tractor is running. Quite possibly you will see air bubbles at the level of the glass portion of the bowl. (or air is infiltrating from another portion of the fuel supply) The cure for my 8N situation turned out to be a new fuel bowl; less than 20$ at Tractor Supply.

Good Luck,
Bob

Thanks to all for the suggestions. All of the ignition-related parts are almost new, but that doesn't mean they are all good, necessarily. You've given me several things to check, now I have to go out and do some diagnosis.

Again, thanks.

Bill

one other thing to check is the ampmeter. on our naa it would run fine then misteriously die and then after a bit it would start up fine. i jumped across the ampmeter and have never had a problem since. aperently the ampmeter would go open circuit everynow and then.

I've had many more condensers fail than coils on my 960.

We've mounted the coils on a 1" thick block of wood to insulate it a bit grom the heat, they don't fail much now. (Use to have 2 960s...)

If the engine gets hot & the fuel gets hot the gas can boil & you aren't getting fuel.

If your distributor is badly worn it can act up like this, hot blowby past the shaft.

Just some ideas.

Make sure that you are getting fuel to the carb. My 860 has done similar things before. Turned out to be lack of fuel. Good Luck

I agree with Jim's analysis. One thing to add is that insure your gas tank is well vented. I don't have an orginal tank so not sure if yours has a vent hole or the cap is vented. It's highly likely to be the coil though, it can cause some strange things to happen especially if it's a 6 volt.

A couple of common items that usually fail after getting warm are the coil and the key switch. The key switch is easy to confirm or eliminate as a suspect. Next time you take it out, carry a jumper wire with you. When it starts to act up, jumper the key switch terminals (thus taking the switch out of the circuit). If your problem goes away, you've found your bad part.

I don't have an answer for the rpm fluctuations. Maybe other, more experienced people will offer some possibilities.
