I am begining restoration of a 1958 801. It has had an older 12V conversion installed and the alternator looks like an auto part and is not authentic. Does anyone know of a conversion that will look like the original generator or any suggestions will be appreciated

If you are doing a restoration it has to be returned to 6 volt. If you are just fixing it up and painting it, a 12 volt generator will do the job. Generators were used till '65 I believe. Somebody will correct if not.

Thanks for the info

What would be involved in returning to a 6 volt system???

Not sure what year they went to the 12v systems but I understand that the diesel was changed first. If you happen to have the original 6v generator take it to a rebuild shop and have it changed to 12v and get the 12v regulator. If you do not have the original generator then go to ford/new holland or even napa and compare the 6v to the 12v generators and have them set you up with the correct regulator. My assumption is that all other electrical components are already 12v. The starter can remain 6v untill repair time.
