I have a ford model # 542 baler and it is out of time, does anyone have a clue on how to time it?

Which timing do you need. And you might want to ask this question over on the implement forum. Are we in a big hurry like you got hay on the ground and the baler is not working rpoperly or you are getting ready and checked the timing.

The only timing on the baler are the feed tines and the knotters. The timing chain for the knotters is on the left hanbd side. The manual should show how to set tht etiming for them. If you don't have a manual, I would suggest going to a dealer and having them order one for you. Basically, it needs to be set so the two twine needles come up to the notters when the plunger is all the way backtowards the rear. If they come up prior to that, the plunger will snap them off (big bucks to replace).

Actually that is not the case. There are at least 4 timings for this baler, the inner feed fork, the outer feed fork, the twine disc and the plunger-needle timing. For the plunger-needle timing the needles need to be coming into the chamber as the plunger face has just passed them on the compression part of the stroke. The Ford baler plunger has a slot that the needles stay in for most of the cycle and the plunger pulls back as the needles are on the down stroke. The needles would be broken first cycle by adjusting them when the plunger was fully withdrawn as they would push hay into the needles and break them.

You are correct that the manual shows all of these timings and no truer words than your recommendation to buy a manual.
