I just purchased a 1954 Ford Jubilee with a fresh rebuild on the engine. When moving the lever to lift it react in 1 of 3 different ways. It will either lift correctly (not very often), it will start to lift very slowly then stop, or it will not lift at all. On the last 2 types if you let it sit for a while, sometimes it will finish the lift. The lift is having problems as though it is out of fluid. I have checked the fluid and it seems to be full. Has anyone run into this and can you give me any advise?

Try bleeding the hydraulic pump. With the motor running take out the plug on the pump and see if you get any bubbles - if you do let it run until it's clear.

Chances are they may have rebuilt the engine but not the lift cylinder in the rear. You will need to pull the top off the rear end to get to the cylinder. I imagine the seals are worn and the fluid leaks past the piston. I have seen some that would not lift until pressure was put on the arms. Others would not lift heavy loads. One way of telling is when it is fully raised, it will drop slowly and then raise again. This is due to fluid seeping by the piston and when the arms get low enough the valve will open to raise the arms again. Also, if you shut the tractor off with the arms raised and they drop without lowering the lift lever, the piston seals are leaking. This is a common problem in the older tractors. The seals are fairly easy to replace. I would recomend buying a IT repair manual if you are planning on doing it yourself, or get someone that knows how to do it. If you have any other questions, please EMail.
