4000 Diesel Alternator Conversion

Saturday morning my generator blew the front bearing when I was bush hogging with my '63 4000 Diesel. After disecting the generator and taking the remnants of the bearing to NAPA for a match-up, I found it is cheaper to convert to an alternator. NAPA sold me a "self-exciting" GM type alternator (one wire only, to the battery, with internal regulator), which I mounted in the original location by flipping around the bottom generator bracket. I put a 3/8 bolt through it and matched a 39" belt to it. I ran a 12 gauge wire to the battery side of the starter solenoid and it charges fine. I did away with the old wiring and the voltage regulator mounted under the hood.
Since I had to mount the alternator hinge bracket to the front of the generator bracket I need to get a longer 3/8 bolt to allow me to run the bolt through both holes in the generator bracket for more stablization, but it runs fine like it is now, just at a slight angle.
Total investment was about 2 hours of work and about 105.00 bucks. And the alternator has a lifetime warranty.
Just wanted to let everyone know in case they were looking to switch. Just keep in mind mounting the alternator will be the most difficult part.

Just curious, what cost $105? If you just had to buy an alt, bolt and belt.

The alternator was 80.98 with tax, including an 11.50 core charge (they wouldn't take the generator on core). The belt was 14.49 and the roll of 12 gauge wire was about 5.00. The alternator and belt seemed kind of pricy, but it's NAPA, who always seems to be higher than everyone else, and the alternator has a lifetime warranty. Considering that a reman generator from this web site costs about 145.00, I feel like I made out well on cost. NAPA couldn't get me a cost on the generator on Saturday. They guessed it at about 100.00. So I still feel good about it because I didn't have to wait and didn't get surprised by a price that was likely more than 100.00 on that generator.

I've heard the one wire was more expensive than the 3 wire. To do this on a budget. Get the 3 wire 70s chevy vehicle alt at an autozone for about 20 + 15 core and the alt plug for about 2. Buy a burnt up alt at the junk yard for about 5 for the core(going to try this today). Our local Napa quotes or brings you the highest priced item first, ask them if that is the lowest priced item they have. This wont help you but others might go this route.

How do you wire the three wire alternator to charge?

As per this diagram two wires hook together then run as per diagram or you could run them to the large battery side of the selenoid once you convert to 12V. The other small wire takes a diode or the spade type car side marker light to stop bleed back causing your engine to run with the key off. I use the regular dash light with a 12V bulb. The GM alt needs a little goose to get it charging because the stock pulley is to large and doesnt let the alt spin fast enough on start up to get it charging.

I hooked one of those 3 wire alt.s on a boat and used a relay switch out of a car it works great and better than having lights all over

Its not multiple lights. On mine its the regular old ford tractor light showing a charge or not.
