Ford 660 starts cranking by itself!

OK guys (or gals) - this is a strange one. Only recently, my 55 Ford 660 has decided to start cranking by itself. All 3 times the key was off. The first two times, the tractor was in gear (3rd) while parked and hopped forward on the cranking - the 3rd time I actually witnessed this happen and the tractor was not in gear - it just started winding. I might add that the tractor had been off for at least an hour in all cases and in at least one case hadn't been run for a day. Is there any logic as to what may be happening here? I now unhook the battery every time I walk away from this monster.

If you look at the tractor schematic you will see that the starter is powered directly from the battery without an ignition relay (like in a car). Therefore if you try to start the tractor with the key off, it will still crank (but not turn over since the ignition key does power the coil and therefore the spark plugs). Try it sometime. The starter button just grounds the starter relay coil to the tractor chassis.

All that said, my money would be on a short to the chassis in the wire that runs from the starter button to the starter relay. Look for damaged insulation somewhere where it is rubbing the tractor body or sheet metal. Wiggling the wire (with the tractor in neutral!) might also help you pinpoint the problem, but be careful, the tractor will move if it is in gear.

It could also be a defective starter relay (not likely) or a defective starter button.

Good luck!

Since it happens with the key off and in gear, you can be pretty certain that both the key switch and starter button switch are OK. (They would both have to fail at the same time, not too likely.)

Check out the starter relay. It's a cylinder that has a battery cable connected to one side and the starter cable on the other. You'll see small wires connected to the relay. Trace them back, looking for shorts (maybe a wire scraping sheet metal). If the wiring looks good, replace the relay.
