Sherman Step down????

I purchased a Sherman transmission thinking it was a combination. Outward appearance looked like it. After I received it, it is a step down and direct. The ratio is 9:1 in low range and direct in the other position. It has the spur type gears in it. Shifting handle is like the combo.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this transmission?

Hi Bill, Step down Shermans were originally offered for the Early 9N'S and 8N'S because they were so fast in low gear, all of the early tractors had them before the combination Sherman came out. Thanks Tony Jacobs

I don't have specific knowledge about Shermans so these are a couple of guesses:
1. Do we know what the reduction ratio was in a stock step-down Sherman? If it was 9:1 like yours, then maybe someone just stuck a combo handle on a step-down trans when he broke his original handle.
2. Maybe someone really handy took a combo trans casing and built his own custom made step-down to meet his own specific needs. In that case you would really have a one-off.

Bill, I never knew sherman made just a step down trans. If you put the lever in the nuetral postion can you push the lever in toward the trans or pull it out. On your over/under sherman trans, you have1 speed forward pull back to nuetral then on back to another speed. Then go up to nuetral and pull out on handle and back for yet anther speed. Theres probably a shifting pattern in the archives. John

John,
Thanks for your reply. Jim from UT posted 3 pictures of tranny on the 9N-2N- 8N forum. It is only 2 speed. Lever forward is step down. 9:1 ratio. Lever back is direct drive. 1:1. It only has one shift rail. The gears in it are spur type gears. The combo has helical gears. It seems to be an odd one!

I'll trade you a step up or a shuttle for it.

I'm looking for a Sherman tranny with a low range for my '51 8N. Are you planning on keeping it?

I am planing on putting it in my show tractor, but I'm seeking info on it so I know what to expect. A 9:1 ratio is going to make it very slow!!
