Auto part stores have a book "Rebuilding Ford Big Blocks."
It has everything you need to know about a rebuild of 360 - 460's.
You could try Amazon.com under used books, it's a Clymer publication I think.

My old Marquis Brougham 1970, 429 CID Mercury engine was equiped with the 4Bl Mercury carb @ 360 HP; the standard 2 Bl @ 320 HP. The 4 Bl carb was standard on the Marquis Marauder. There was a Police interceptor version with engine oil cooler and the carb was a Holley @ 370 HP.
N.B : At that time, HP were not net HP available at the drive wheels. Net HP figures went out circa 1973.

The D3VE number on the heads is an engineering number (not a part number) and means that the head was designed in 1973 when power was on its way down. They probably have large, open combustion chambers to lower the compression ratio. As I recall the desirable head for the 429 is the DOVE head, meaning it was designed in 1970. I'm sure that the engineering number on your block is D1VE meaning that it was designed in 1971. It sounds like you have a 429 that came out of a full size car such as a Thunderbird or Galaxy 500 that was made in 1973 or later. I would guess that it makes no more than 250-275 horsepower.
If you were around in the early 1970's I'm sure that you will remember that 1971 was the last year for high performance. The gasoline shortages and pollution regulations forced the auto makers to reduce compression and add pollution controls to engines after that. The 1971 Mustang Mach 1 and Torino GT were the last cars to have a high performance version of the 429 and it was called the 429 Cobra Jet. The ultimate 429 was the Boss 429 from 1969 and 1970. It had semi-hemispherical combustion chambers and was designed for NASCAR racing. Even Richard Petty switched to Ford for 1969 because the Boss 429 could outrun anything else that showed up.

I was Wondering if you had anymore references to the 429 Big Block, like could you send me a list of codes, or all of your knowledge, it would be of great consideration, and valuable to the building of my 429 Big Block, THanks for everything
