172 industrial gas camshaft problem

The camshaft i have in the engine is part #310377. This camshaft uses a bolt to hold the cam gear on.I bought a new camshaft for it and the part # is CONN6251A. The gear on this cam is pressed on with a snap ring to hold it on. The two cams are different in this respect, but I do not know if the cam profiles are different. It looks like they may be. Has anybody been through this problem and remedied it by using an offset key and drilled a hole and tapped the press-on gear cam to accept the bolt that holds the gear on instead of using the snapring. It looks like ford made mega amounts of CONN6251A and found a place to use it replacing 310377. If anybody could help it would be greatly appreciated.

I also bought a new cam for my 960 tractor. It also had the press on & clip without re-using the bolt. I cant tell anydifference from the old to the new.

I profiled the camshaft and it is identical to the old one. Was checked at .050, .200 and gross lift on both sides of ex. and int. and worked out to the same.I'm going to heat the cam gear up and shrink it on to the camshaft. Put a shim and snap ring on so there is no clearance between the snap ring and gear. Ron, if your's is not a tight press fit you'd better drill a hole in a lathe and tap it to accept the bolt and take some off the end of the camshaft to hold the cam gear on. You could also use loctite, high heat RC 620.Press it on and do the same thing I did.

Thanks for the InFo Matt.I planed to degree my two cams to, but you beat me to it(my block still at machine shop).I will probley still check it just to be safe. Was there any difference in the max lift? I will install new cam gear set and I will check to see that it has a good fit.Did you get the snap ring and shim from New Holland or is it a standard size? How do the U.S. and CAN.doller compare? Thanks again for the help....Ron

Hi Matt. I am in the same boat that you are in,I just got a new cam from New Holland(CONN6251A)for my 172 gas and thought it to looked like it had a different profile.I also noticed that mine has diesel cast into it(new cam).I called the dealer back and he said thay are the same cams for gas or deisel. I looked at my old cam and could not find a part #.all it has is FOMOCO and EAF on it for the 172.What I have not yet noticed was there is no threded bolt hole in the end of this cam as well.I will be watching this post with you to see if some one can help out on this.I would think that there would be something better than a snap ring and press fit to hold the cam gear on.How much did you have to pay for your cam? This one cost me $183 and I just seen that you can get the same thing from Mikes Tractor web site for $145(must be my dealer mark up)Thanks. Ron

Ron, hang tight. I am going to degree the cam and find out if both cams have the same profile. I am going to either machine the end down and drill a hole in the new cam and tap it to accept a bolt. The other option is to just press it on with loctite. I PAID $256 CAN. FROM FORD NEW HOLLAND.Talk to you in a bit.
