I have a 1964 4000 ford with the 5 speed transmission. The manual shows two levers into the clutch housing mine has only one. Does this tractor have live PTO.

I'm not sure that ALL 5 speeds had the 2-stage clutch, which was the "live" pto. I *think* it depended on the model # on these. I have a '64 4000, model number 41202, which translates into Post 1963 made, Utility type, Wide Front, 5 speed, live PTO.

Check here for details, but you need your model # to be sure.

Hey Tommy D., I was just checking some original Ford Literature about your 5 Speed response, and according to Ford the only 5 SPEED built was the LIVE PTO VERSION from JUNE 1962(The begining of 4 CYLINDER Thousand Series Production with Blue and Gray paint colors) to SEPTEMBER 1965(The end of 4 CYLINDER Thousand Series Production with Blue and Gray paint colors) So Hurley has to have a Live Pto 5 speed tractor. I have never seen a Blue and Gray Ford with a Five Speed up here in the Northeast . Unfortunately Production figures vary for 1965 4 CYLINDER PRODUCTION but it is between 6,620 to 7,761 as far as I can tell, and I have had 3 1965 Ford 4 cylinder tractors, An All-Purpose 4 Speed, A Light-Duty Industrial with S-O-S and a Heavy-Duty Industrial with a 4 speed which makes them as RARE as 1957 01 Series tractors which had a production run of 7,166 units, Which buy the way a friend of mine has just located a 1957 841 built in the first 100 units of production. Thanks Tony Jacobs

Your tractor has live PTO.

I dunno what the second lever is that you're talking about, but it doesn't have anything to do with the clutch or PTO. The PTO lever is on the left hand side of the transmission, directly under the seat.

You should have a two-stage clutch: Push the clutch pedal down halfway and the transmission clutch should disengage and the PTO should continue to operate. Push the pedal all the way down and the PTO should stop.

Hurley has not given us enough info to tell whether his tractor has live PTO or not. I'll bet he has a manual for a 3 cylinder 4000, which would have 2 shifters.

Had the same thought Rick but if it is really a five speed then it would have a live PTO. Don't think the five speeds came any other way. Was waiting for Hurley to give us that model number to be for sure.

"if it really is a five speed it must be live PTO"

I don't know about the Thousand series, but five speed Hundred series came with or without live pto. I know because I have a non-live pto 800 with a 5 speed.

There are two sets of numbers on the clutch housing where the S/N should be. The number in the first row is 41202. The number in the second row is 47238 and has a diamond shaped mark just before it and one just behind it.

The serial number on the tractor breaks out to show it equipped with 5-speed and a live PTO. The levers that I am speaking of are in some photos in a I & T shop service manual. A photo shows a 5-speed with the information for the clutch freeplay adjustment. There is the lever or arm that the clutch attachs to and another lever in the clutch housing and is located just behind the clutch lever. The holes that these levers or arms are in look to be about 5.0 inches a apart. There are sure a lot of parts not being serviced by the company since the buyout by fiat. Sure wish Ford still owned the company. Are you guys experiancing the same thing. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

Pre 1965 4000's with a 4 speed did not have live pto same as the 100 series.
