2000 Brake Drum Removal

I'm having a difficult time getting the brake drum off of my 1972 2000. I've loosened the brake shoes, used copious amounts of penetrating oil and pounded on the drum. The local tool rental place does not have a wheel puller large enough to span the drum.

Any ideas?

Snap-On-Tools has a puller big enough, I have one.
I have had to put the puller on the drum and tighten it pretty hard. Then put the fire wrench on it also.

Like Rick said, heat the drum center around the axle hole. Keep the heat off of the axle center as best you can. After you get the drum hot cool the axle center with a squirt bottle of water and it should loosen right up.

Another trick is to be up on jack stands, get the drums spinning (without tires bolted on) and then slam the brake. This will provide a little shock to the assembly as the axle twists and the drum doesn't and might be enough to get them to break free. Leave a lug nut or two on loose to keep the drum from flying off.

Find a puller large enough to do the job. Heat the drum's pilot hole area with an acetylene torch. Did you back the brake adjuster off?

I backed the brake adjuster off right after removing the tire. I'll try to locate a larger puller tomorrow.
