I'm looking at a 1962 Ford 4000. Runs good and everything is in good shape except brakes and no headlights. 4 cyl. gas. It's never been painted but it's not too beat up on the outside. Seems like it's a solid tractor. I want to pull a 6 ft. bushhog, haul firewood, drag logs and do light disking and seeding on rolling to fairly steep 40 acres. would it do the job or should I look for a 5000? I was surprised at how small it was.
The man wants $4500. What's it worth? Any input would be appreciated. Chris/KY

Price does sound steep. I payed $3,800 for my 62 and it came with a hydrolic sickle mower that runs off the front crank. I've yanked a few trees and stumps with mine so theres some torque there for ya. And my headlamps and right brake dont work either. work the price down or look for another tractor. Good luck

I have the same tractor and it will do anything you wont it the do but if its a SOS transmission I would buy a over-running coupler that way you wont stall or damage the engine when you run over sum thing that you cant handle like a tree wile bush hogging good luck Rod MI

If you ever have to replace the full tank I would go to the NAA sediment bowl setup it will save a lot of money in fuel shut of valves (last about a year and cost $50) personally I would when the valve goes bad on it I would do the conversion then good luck Rod MI

It seems to me that a true 4000 should be a 63 or 64. You didn't say what transmission the tractor has. If it has a SOS, it is too high. $4500 seems too high anyway (at least in our area). Should do the job on 40 acres, but the 5000 Ford is a great size. It will do anything you need to do. A loader is a great tool around a farm and it will hold its resale value better. This is just my two cents' worth. Good luck from dry north Missouri. Ron

Chris,
The 2002 Used Tractor Price Guide puts it between $2520 to $4970, depending on condition. From what you described it sounds closer to the $2520 figure.
Good luck.
Mike

Well, I'm not sure about 4000's, but $4500 would be top dollar for a '57 641, I've heard.

Maybe comparing apples and oranges, but it seems a little steep to me.
