Why do you like the old Fords and spend time and make a living on these older tractors?

Hi Big Bill, I make my living repairing equipment not any particular brand even though Ford / New Holland stuff is popular around here and always has been. When I was a kid I worked on equipment on my Uncle's farm and my other Uncle's logging business then worked the local Chevy Dealers for around 18 years and got sick of these computerized emission loaded trash that they build today and went back to equipment full time for myself. The Ford tractors came about when I got tired of restoring Chevelle's, Nova's, Camaro's and the people at the shows who took the fun out it. Like Rick said you meet alot of nice down to earth people who don't care if your tractor is mint and perfect or a work horse, but when it comes to a point where tractor shows get judged for points and perfection and the big money comes in it will ruin the fun just like it did at the car shows. I stuck with Fords because of the Elenco front ends, they were the only early four wheel drive utility sized American Made tractors back then and there is alot of them here on the east coast . Since I was doing Farm equipment repair and alot of old stuff I was doing more and more Elenco's as word spread that I was making parts for them, I ended up buying the remains of the original company getting all the old parts stock, blueprints etc. etc. The old Fords are simple to work on, reliable, easy to get parts for, both new and used, and they made millions of them for a long period of time which made them very popular when they were new as well as now. Do you know anyone who can't relate to a Ford tractor? Plus I like to fix things people say that you can't fix or you will never find the parts or they can't do it themselves and I like to run trucks and tractors that everybody thinks are just old junk and make money at it too. Mechanics are becoming a dying breed just like Farmers because there is not big money in it like other lines of work but in the Future we made need to grow our own food again and fix what ever you have on hand to do it and then who's going to have a problem? Life went on without computers and most other gadgets we have today but it won't go on without food and even basic mechanical things to grow it . Thanks Tony Jacobs

Tony makes some good points here. I am a bodyshop mng in a chevy/olds dealership. I entered this business working on the cars in the mid 80's and alot has changed since even then. I find Tony, Rick, and a few others comments interesting so Im a daily reader in here now, Thanks guys. There arent may mechanics or even bodymen out there anymore for hire. The replys you guys make to the question do make sence and it helps me workin on my tractor, my uncles, and cusinz. I find myself sayn " no chit! yep their right". My grand father was a farm since 1947 and a cattle dealer who would take me around buying calves at 4am and met alot of farmers and they were good people. It seems good people are harder to come by these days and its good to see all you guys helpin out other folk in distress. Just my opinon on what I've seen you people doing.

Very well said, Tony.

While I do not make a living working on older stuff (but I have thought about it), I have always had an affinity for older equipment, cars, trucks, boats, anything mechanical. Could be because I am cheap and don't mind fixing things or it could be that, like Tony (and alot of others), I like to make the slightly different stuff work again. There is an immense amount of pride involved in taking somebody else's cast offs and unwanteds and making them useful again. It is the ultimate in recycling.
