I looked at a 1957 640 yesterday. It wasn't as the owner described, but I'll tell you what I saw and maybe you can tell me what to do.

The tractor didn't run, but I did a compression test cold and dry and got between 100 and 85 PSI depending on which cylinder. The tractor had no air cleaner assembly and had been operated that way for a while. The sheet metal was worthless...yea it was there, but bent and rusted through. Same with the fenders. It had gauges but no proofmeter. Tires had good tread 90%+ and were not weather cracked. Overall, I think it was salvagable.

While not great, I think the engine was probably OK for light duty, but would need a re-build if it were asked to do any serious work. I would have to find an air cleaner assembly and ALL the sheetmetal...no easy task.

Question: Would the metal from a NAA, 601, 800, 801 or any others fit? What other models could I get the air cleaner off of?

Based on other work I have done on tractors, my instinct tells me to stay away from this one. The price...$1000.

Any opinions are welcomed...thanks...BB

My 850 has about the same compression readings and I get plenty of work out of it. I use it to cut and bale hay in the summer. If it ever snows I drag snow with it in the winter. The sheetmetal will be the biggest challenge. You can find fenders and I've heard of aftermarket sources for hood sides (doglegs), but for the actual hood you're gonna have to go boneyard shopping. To my knowledge any hood from Jubilee through the x01 series will work although some of those will be the wrong color. No problem since you're going to paint it anyway, right? The air cleaner may be a challenge, too. Not good that he ran it without a cleaner. I'd probably steer clear unless the price got cut in half. At $500 you could conceivably get your money back in parts if you decided it couldn't be saved. My opinion. I may be wrong about the interchange of hoods, but hopefully someone will set me straight.

Hi guys, I gave $1600 for a '58 641 w/combo trans. It popped out of low range, steering geerbox didn't steer, no brakes, bad radiator. I was glad to get it. New radiator, new top bearing in the steering box, new shifter fork in Sherman, new rear seals and brakes, new fluids, and she's back in service. It was a good stress relieving project for this winter. I put about $1000. in it in parts so now it's a fine machine for $2600.
