My injector pump will not pump. The tractor has set up for 3 years prior to my purchase 1 week ago. Is there anything I should look for when cleaning out the pump? Is there a problem area with these pumps? I was reading the archives and found out these pumps are 750.00 rebuilt. I would like to salvage this pump if at all possible. If I can't I'll have problems salvaging my marriage. The wife says to many toys.

Hi Barry in AL,

"Retired" is right, the most common problem after long storage is a stuck fuel metering valve. Like he says, this is the fuel throttle valve; it's moved by the injection governor spring and weights; has a vey close tolerance (7 microns).
You might break it loose by moving the throttle control rapidly from fast to slow.
This might sound pretty crude but I've been able to break it loose by tapping the side of the injection pump with a small wrench (Throttle positon should be "fast"; it puts spring pressure on the metering valve to open it. You can lift the top cover of the injection pump a quarter inch without disconnecting linkage inside and stick a screwdrive inside to pop it loose. If you do get it running use some fuel conditioner in the diesel. Of course there are many other possibilities, one thing to check is that the return line off the top of the pump is not blocked. Excessive case pressure inside the injection pump will prevent the main pump plungers from retracting on their intake stroke and they won't pump any fuel. Be sure to thorougly clean the inlet screen assembly on the back of the vane transfer pump. Be careful to get all the pieces back right, this is also the transfer pump pressure regulating valve.

Hopes this helps in your quest for toys and marriage, I know it can be a thin line.

Sounds like the throttle valve has stuck,(in the inj. pump) this is one of the main problems with these pumps after they sit for long periods of time. Most people leave the fuel stop pulled out when they get off the tractor and the valve will stick in the off posistion. If you are mechanically inclined this can be fixed with the pump on the tractor.

Ditch the wife and buy another tractor. You will get more service. I have had several rebuilt for 2000, 3000, 4000, and even other brands and they range from 250.00 to 350.00 for most. They most expensive one I ever had done was a Bosch pump for a Zetor. It had to be completely rebuilt from end to end and the parts had to be shipped in from Germany. Total price 567.72. Check around (Not at tractor repair shops - They are always too high) for shops that fix diesel fuel injection pumps. They usually charge 50per hour plus parts and they warranty the work. Tractor shops will just send it out to these guys. Another option is an electric pump.
