4000 won't start

I have a 1970 Ford 4000 3 cyclinder diesal. Last night after brush hogging I decided to wash it. When I was done I notice it was missing. Every 5-10 seconds there was a little puff of white smoke. (This had never happen before). I let idle for while and revved up the engine. This morning it wouldn't start. It tried but, it never turned over.

I figure I got water in something, but not being very mechanical I'm not sure what. Any suggestions what to check would be appreciated. Thanks

I've heard the cracked block, head theories. If you washed this tractor with it hot and especially if it was running, you could have damaged the injection pump. Running clearances are very fine in this unit and cold water makes hot components of the pump shrink very fast from the outside in.

dont know how the breather is arrainged on a 4000 but have known of others that have sprayed the breather full of water by accident and if theres no air..then you have no ignition..just a thought good luck

I just recently went through a very similar scenerio with my '75 4000. Hard to start, running badly, missing, poor power output, I found the head gasket was blown, so in the process of removing the head etc. I had the injectors reworked, had the head checked for flatness, reseated the valves, changed all the fuel filters and found the glow plug disconnected.(it had always been hard to start in the cold). $467 dollars later and finally after reassembly, bleeding filters and injectors, and reconnecting the wire for the glowplug, it runs and starts better than ever before, has lots of power and continues to meet all of my needs for a tractor.

You can try cracking the injectors ever so slightly and see if it will start or see if fuel leaks around the stem,if fuel comes out it should start then let it run for a few seconds loose to let the air out and tighten while running, should smooth out.Look for something around the engine that may have come loose during the spray clean first.Report back

I agree with Fred. There has to be a fuel problem somewhere, probably not the injector pump, probably not a bad injector, probably a line that has come loose somewhere letting air into the fuel lines..... ...unless, and this is the worst scenario..... ..when you washed it was the engine hot ? I think you know where I'm heading with that question. One more thing, I presume that the starter is kicking over the engine at least 200+ rpm. Anything less, and that diesel will give you a hard time starting. My $.02

Thanks for all the information. I won't be able to try again until next week, but I will let you know what the problem is (I hope).

For a gas engine, you need fuel, air, spark and compression.

for a diesel, the spark takes care of itself.

So, since it's not likely that you topped off the fuel tank with your garden hose, you probably have water in your air intake.

(Of course, I'm hoping you didn't spray cold water on a hot engine. That could spell the end of compression by cracking the block or head.)

You have confused the issue when you say it never turned over. Do you mean the tractor's starter did not turn the engine over, or are you saying the engine turned over but did not start ? These are two very different problems and solutions depending on what you mean.

Sorry for the confusion. It turned over, but wouldn't start.
