Help! If, any of you men out there or women know where I can find a reliable mechanic in Southern Maine to work on my tractor please tell me who it is.

It is possible for me to do the work if I only knew where to get the parts as I have had to call away to Pennsylvania at times to get parts.

I am having a problem starting my tractor this year in that when I push the starter button nothing happens. It is a six volt battery and it is charged and working. I know it is not the battery. I have also in the past used an 8-volt battery which has given me more amps in the winter--so I am not sure whether or not I have hurt the engine by using this 8-volt battery. What else could I do or try to get this tractor going.

It has a backhoe and a bucket on it otherwise I would have someone come and pick it up to work on if I knew where I could go with it.

Do you think it is alright?
Thanks Bobbie jo

Hi Bobbie jo, The starter button on my 850 sometimes engages and sometimes it doesn't. Wiggle it and see if it connects while pressing it down. Check to be sure the wire is tightly attached as it may be a loose connection.

First I'd check the key switch with a voltmeter, put the voltmeter on ohms setting and place meter leads on each end of the key switch wires..with key off you would see no meter movement..with key on you would see a hard short...I'd then do the same with the starter button wires..

nothing happens when you push th starter button. If this mans the starter does not turn the motor then you can jump start the tractor directly to the starter. (CAREFUL_POSITIVE TO POSITIVE). If the starter turns then you will have a problem in either the safety lock, the solonoid. or the wire and connections to the battery.

Not familiar with southern Maine but Lovell, Maine has a good mechanic in Don Chandler. 207-925-2904.

Call him he could recommend someone closer to your woods.

Here is the checklist: but before that...is the wring old or new? How about the ammeter?, relay?

From the battery have you checked your power and current flow? Do you have a cheapo test light?

Follow the wires with the ignition key on and see where you may be losing it.

starter switches go bad.

Key switches go bad.

6V systems go bad when the wires are not tight to their contacts and connections. you could have a short somewhere the wire may be loose or broken.

Sytematically follow the wires and replace them one at a time if they are old, brittle, or tighten and clean the contacts.

6V systems need to be clean, bright, and tight.

As far as 8V goes...it's possible that you could have fried a coil, but unlikely. How old is your coil. And have you checked that the insulator around the wire from your coil going inside the distributor is not worn?

Need more information on your points too. Old? new? worn? slipped? and the gap is open? or closed?

Need more info to help you problem solve this. Follow your current and see where it bugs out.

check to make sure the neutral safety is working. sometimes i have to hold the starter button down while i wiggle the shifter lever to find the notch.

My 820 wouldn't start,it drove me nuts.I changed everything, still nothing. Then an old Ford mechanic told me to check the skinny wire going from the coil into the distributor.I loosened the nut connecting the wire to the distributor, and wiggled the wire while my dad pressed the starter,it started right up!Seems that the pole piece was shorting out against the metal of the distributor base.Never had a problem after that.Tell us how it works out.John.
