I am finally doing it! I have the alternator, the 12v coil, and battery as well as notes and a diagram posted here back in February. My question is...will the starter solenoid be okay with the 12v system? Also, I see in the diagram and have heard discussed here the use of a diode or lamp bulb in the charging circuit? What does this do? Thanks in advance!

Well, I replaced everything and got it running (and charging) and it idled for about 10 minutes before it died. A few checks with the meter and I determined the starter solenoid fried. I purchased a new ST-83 solenoid and the meter reads okay now. I did notice that the voltage to the coil is only 11.5v as opposed to the 12.5v throughout the system. Is this normal?

You should be good to go on the selenoid for a long time. Might as will use it and replace when it goes out.

I'm not sure, but think that if you "hit" the solenoid with 12-volts, it will eventually burn out. (I'll accept correction on that from almost anyone.) I don't think it is an instant burn; you are energizing an electro-magnet to "mash together" the far heavier contacts from your battery cables.

If it does, or if you just want to replace it in advance, Tony Jacobs recommended to me that I use a NAPA #ST 83 solenoid. It has an extra little connetion on the back you can run to ground, which mine wouldn't start without, and thus I found my battery box wasn't making a ground for the solenoid.

The ignition resistor, NAPA # IRC11, (or the lamp) drains off the voltage from the alternator on the load side of the terminal block. (Once the alternator gets excited, it keeps pushing voltage.) Without it, your tractor (well, mine anyway, ) won't shut off.

Hope this helps,
DonP

Hi Don, My purpose in the use of the NAPA ST-83 solenoid was to have an extra terminal that was hot only during cranking so that 12 volts could be fed to the coil for a hotter spark and easier starts, as soon as the tractor starts the juice go through the normal terminal then through the resistor so the points would not get burned, but it must work the way you have it hooked up also. If you take a spark tester and check spark while cranking and while running you will see the difference in the two and if you hook it up the way I do you will see no difference in the spark between cranking and running . Thanks Tony Jacobs

Thanks a lot. I will check with my local NAPA dealer for both those parts.
