4000 Tach inop., Cable not turning

The Tach on my 67 4000 series (4200 Rowcrop) hasn't worked since I got it and I've been wanting to get it going. The cable ends are nice and square, but it doesn't turn with the engine running. It does turn freely in the housing. I'm a little leery of tearing into that Lucas generator (in the automotive world Lucas has been a bad word for many years) Any guidance/experience would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

On my '69 4500 the drive was turning (I took out the cable, turned the alternator/generator/whatever and looked at the drive, as my first guess was that the gears were stripped) but the drive socket had stripped so that it was not engaging the cable and actually turning it. Being inherently cheap (I'd like it to work, but this is not a show tractor) I fiddled about until I'd fabricated a shim which got the turning but stripped out drive to engage the cable and turn it, and suddenly I had working tach & hourmeter.

The right angle tach drive at the rear of the gen is probably shot. 2 screws hold it onto the gen, with a worm gear protruding from the end of the armature. The worm gear is probably OK. The drive is available from New Holland and TISCO. Will spoil $65 US. Nothing to be afraid of by pulling the drive off the gen for a look.

Many thanks. I may try to scrounge one up on the posting boards before I go see my (well stocked, but not cheap) dealer.

i had to get a core generator that had a good armature with a worm gear to fix mine. the core generator was only $25. the armature is the center part with the worm gear on the end of the shaft.. sometimes if your lucky, its the other small gear in the right angle housing in the end of the gen held on by the two screws mention above.. when you reassemble, besure to add a generous glob of white grease to the right angle housing. these generators are very common across the tractor salvage yards..
