Tony, had something strange happen this past weekend. On my 62'4000 with a 4 speed,i was running in third gear.Stopped and went to put it in second gear, seemed to go in ,but when i let out the clutch,it stalled.Did the same thing when going into reverse.I have heard of these tranny's going into two gears at the same time ,but i have never experienced it.I drove it around in third a little bit and it was o.k.I know third gear is worn, because it will pop out of third when going down hill.Where should i start to look as far as a repair.

Hi Al, Sorry for the delay but I do not check the board everyday if I work to late. Start with the shift cover , your H pattern for shifting should be a crisp H not worn and sloppy like shifting in an N pattern or if you can cross through the gates on an angle. If it is take it off and look at the bottom side you will see the wear in the gates if it is that bad find a good used one, it will not cure your popping out of 3rd gear but it will help from getting locked in two gears at once. Your third gear problem will involve disassembly of the trans to replace worn gears, bearings, and shim up the shaft end play to correct the problem, get your manual out to see what it looks like all apart. Thanks Tony Jacobs

Al,
I am sure Tony will answer soon but I had the same problem with my old tractor. I removed the bolts securing the shift lever housing to the top of the transmission. I noticed that the shift forks were not lined up evenly; apparently two forks somehow got pushed into gear at the same time. I pushed them back into alignment and that solved my problem. I guess with two forks in gear, the transmission was trying to go into two gears at once thus it stalled. I hope that is your problem as it was easily fixed. Good Luck, Don
