(this is a follow up from a post a few days ago) I tried starting it again after letting it sit for a few days and it still won't start. There is no smoke coming out of the stack(there is air) so either the glow plugs are not working or its not getting any fuel. I drained the fuel at the filter to get the air out, but that didn't help. I'm going to trace the fuel line this weekend to see if it blocked someplace else. If I can't figure it out, I guess it time to call somebody else.

Make sure the cut-off valve for the fuel is open on the bottom of the tank. Also some times this valve is full of stuff and will need to be cleaned. The valve is not expensive. You might buy a new one and install. Also the fuel filter will stop up with water. I never go through the bleed route. I hook the pick-up to the tractor with my wife driving the pick-up, put the tractor in the highest gear and pull it. start out with the clutch pushed in and let out after the tractor is rolling good. It will start in less than a 100 foot.

So did you spray cold water on a hot engine? - lots of folks have suggested you might have cracked something critical if you did, and as you washed it after bush-hogging I'd imagine it would have been hot...the fact that is started running oddly right after the wash is also Not A Good Sign, but might just mean water in the fuel.

If you have not cracked something, then doing the full bleed procedure seems to be called for, to make sure that fuel is getting to the injectors. Start with draining water from the fuel filter, in case you simply got some water into the fuel tank by spraying too hard on a filler with a crappy seal, which is a lot cheaper than cracked anything to fix ;-). A new fuel filter might be good if it's not been changed recently.

You may want to have a battery charger on hand for an extensive bleeding session, as there's lots of cranking without starting.

If the 4000 3 cyl diesel is not too dissimilar from the 4500 3 cyl diesel, there's only one "glow plug" (actually called "Automatic thermostart"); it's located in the intake manifold, not in the cylinders as glow plugs are, and is only needed in winter. If it's there at all and actually wired up (not a given for either) turning the key to the left should activate it, but I don't think that's your problem at this time of year.

If you have fuel flowing out the injectors when you bleed them and it still won't start, I'd personally also risk a small shot of ether, but there are others who will suggest that any ether at all will destroy your engine. It won't do any good if there isn't fuel getting to the injectors, and overdoing it is hard on the engine.

I may have missed something, was the engine running when you washed it? If so and cold water contacted the inj. pump it could cause the pump to sieze in the hydralic head. I have seen this happen. The clearances inside the pump are small, any abrupt temp. changes can cause tremendous damage. It can happen whether or not it was running, but it's more common when it is. Hope this helps!

Thanks for info.
The engine was not hot when I washed it. I just bush hogged a couple of strips around my apple trees. The engine was warm to the touch, but not hot.

I'll trying do a full bleed this weekend.
