Howdy all

I removed the old gauge and oil line (like to slap the fella that designed where the line connect so the block) and for kicks, fired up the tractor just to see if there was ANY oil pressure. At a couple of seconds and some sputs and puts oil shot out to the hole. So i installed the new gauge and line. Fired it up again and had about 20 pounds of pressure for a few minutes and then it dropped to zero again.

So - what is my problem??? so i need to rebuild the oil pump? Or is it something else?

What about the screw on oil filter (fram) could this cause a problem?

Thanks all

alex

The other classic thing that can cause oil pressure to drop when it gets hot is bad bearings.

Alex, Since this is on the ford board and you eariler stated a 631 I am going to assume that your talkin bout a 601 series ford tractor. Since you had pressure for a moment, and them went away, I will also assume that you have plenty-o-oil in the pan. Now if and when you start it you have pressure then it go's away, then the 2 most likely events are - your pumping all the oil out of the pan -or- losing prime (sucking air). Unless there is oil all over the place I shall also assume thats its (oil) is still in the engine. So given all that, I believe that it has the 134CI red tiger engine. The pickup tube on them is on the bottom of the oil pump held on with two bolts. I would look for reasons to loose prime.

Drain oil and verify that you have little more that 1 gallon (4-5 quarts) in it. Drop pan and look / inspect oil pickup tube. (loose bolts, broken tube, etc...). If not and all looks ok, pump is roughly $60 bucks.

I suspect that it a pickup tube problem. Its sounds like when all the oil in the pan she starts out fine but when the level falls a little you loose pressure.

FYI - On my NAA (134CI), the filter drains back into the block. If I check the oil prior to running the engine for a while it will appear full, but really isn't. But I have learned that if it shows full prior to running it, its really 1.5 quarts low.

Your call, but I figured why worry if I did it right. $60 (oil pump) & $11 (gasket), $71 bucks later, No worries.

BTW - you may not need to do anything to it, It just may be as simple as the pickup tube has came loose.

Why not just replace it.
