A likely cause is carbon buildup inside the combustion chambers, which can get hot and ignite the mixture after the switch is off. Try a can of one of the various fuel additives that claim to clean combustion chamber deposits.

Also, make sure that you engine idles down properly. If the idle is too fast, it won't want to shut off.

Always let your engine idle down for at least five or ten seconds before you shut it off. That gives the combustion chamber a chance to cool off.

Too much octane in the fuel will sometimes cause dieseling too. Did you by chance put a tank of 93 or 94 octane in the tractor?

Respectfully, I don't understand your response, since octane is simply a measure of anti-knock ability of the fuel. In fact, it seems to me that the lower gasoline octane would have a better chance of dieseling than the slower burning, anti-knocking of the higher octane. But, I'm here to learn..... ..... .

You're right. I stated it backwards. However, the point is still valid. Since he found the problem, it doesn't apply to him, but the wrong octane gas can cause run-on or dieseling.

you might want to check your timing, too far advanced will cause an engine to diesel and also run a little hotter

Timing is off, engine is running hot, idle is set too high, wrong plugs which cause carbon build-up which causes compression to increase which causes dieseling. If you have just done a rebuild, could be a metal head gasket hanging over a little into the combustion chamber heating up and pre-igniting the fuel. MY $.02

The timing is good, but the idle was set too high.Reset idle and all is good.
