I 'acquired' a tractor with an sos tranny (64 4000) - swore I'd never get one of these but here I am with it and the wife thinks it's 'cute' so 'we should fix it up'..... .. This tranny does some strange things (surges sometimes, other times it quits running till I use a half inch wrench on some shaft down by my left heel, next to a round cover with dipstick and turn it counter clockwise till some gear hooks up again, and the indicator seems to be off by about 1 gear, sometimes seems to be in two gears at once and neutral is about 1, reverse is about N - you get the idea...) - and since I doubt there's anyone in this state that knows anything about one of these, I guess I'd better start studying. Which service/repair manual should I pick up. Are the ford manuals the best with lots of pictures, or is there another publisher I should buy from. Any suggestions appreciated. Again this sure is a strange transmission - once in gear it'll push about anything with the front loader from 1st to 7th and the rest seem to be there but figureing out where you are is a trick. Still haven't found park, and only one reverse although I keep reading on here about r1, and r2. Obviously I need some serious help here - all my other tractors have 'real' transmissions and I have manuals for those and know how to fix them but from what I read on here I'd better have lots of pictures for this one.

thanks in advance,
Bob

First off let me say I'm in your state. Second let me say you're supposed to have a locking strap on that traction coupler that keeps disengaging on you. Third let me say you have no major problems at all with that S.O.S. the way you describe it. Finally, they are right, the Ford manual is the best.

Thanks for the encouraging words that the transmission will be ok. I am beginning to think I may have to admit I should have more respect for these transmissions. Yesterday I decided to see what was in there as far as fluid. Looked like a couple of gallons of sludge - in fact when I pulled out the screen I thought it was a hose with the wall gone soft. Hope it was supposed to be brass screen all the way because that's what it was after cleaning. It shifts much better now anyway. I would have thought it would be dead with what it had for fluid but it was still working. The manual is supposed to arrive this week and then I'll have a clue how to adjust everything.

Thanks to everyone for manual suggestions - I ordered from the local Ford dealer yesterday and the parts guy said he'd order it for me to arrive this week.

Trust me when I say that the Ford manual is without a doubt the best there is if you want to know as much as possible about that tranny. All of the aftermarket ones (at least the ones I've seen) are far too condensed for the beginner.

One word of caution when you go to adjust your shift cable: be VERY careful about making sure it goes fully into park. If you don't have it adjusted properly, and you think it's in park, and yet it's only half way in and it slips out, if you happen to be behind the rig hooking something up... (you know the rest).

Hi Bern,
Since many/most of the solutions to s-o-s problems on here seem to have your name attached I'll certainly follow your suggestion on the manual. If I could ask one more question? I see two manuals listed on here - one is listed as 4000 ('62-'64) Gas and Dsl 4-Cyl Only- Service Manual 40060090 (W), 430 Pages - Part No. (FO-S-2,4000)and the other is listed as SELECTOSPEED- Service Manual, 74 Pages - Part No. (FO-S-SELECTO). Should I order both of these manuals? I am assuming so since from past experience I've never had too much information on hand. And since this tractor came from my wife's uncle who passed away last month I have a feeling this is it's new home.

Thank you for taking your time to answer my questions. I really do appreciate the help.

Bob

The Ford p/n 40060090 manual has the SOS manual in it as the first section. The reprints are a little grainy on the diagrams and are not in color so you have to do some interpretation of the diferent shades of gray that are used. The originals are in color so it is easy to figure out fluid flows and what is under pressure at different times.

It has all of the necessary information (and then some) to allow you to dive in and work on one without running into any "mystery parts."

First thing it sounds like you need to do is adjust the cable, change the filter (still available from NH), and refill with FNH 134 or Valvoline 803? (Bern recommended it to me, if I got the wrong number maybe he will correct me.)

When they work correctly the SOS is slicker than goose poop. When they aren't working correctly they can drive the Pope to cussin' ;) Good luck.
