I have a 1968 ford 4500 3 cyl. diesel with a 12v lucas generator. The gen. is bad and the wiring is burnt up. I am going to convert over to a 12 alternator with new wiring, no external regulator etc. Any idea how I could drive the tach.? Since the old generator was also the tach. drive. I was wondering if the newer tractors have an electrical tach. off the alternator, much like autos....

the wiring on the fords seems pretty simple, you should be able to rebuild it yourself. besides, there are warning lamps and critical guages directly affected by the wiring, making replacement a must. ask around at some local smaller starter/generator shops for the lucas generator. i found one near my home in central MN that has a small stockpile of rebuilt lucases. i paid 75 for it about 4 years ago. i am frustrated with the reliability of the original system myself (5000 diesel), so am looking at alternatives as well, but in the mean time i'm learning a lot.
best luck to you.

Joe, Click on "12 volt kits" at the top of this page and look for the kit to change 3000,4000 to alt. I used one on my 3000 and it included a drive for the proofmeter.

And I'll bet that drive unit is about $200 dealer only..... .... I was almost thinking if I could get the old gen. drive unit attached to the alt. I havn't looked at it yet, but I'm probably bark'n up a tree.

the newer tractors drive the tach off the old distribitor fitting. they also have a reversed direction proof meter... so you would need to buy the new proof meter, and all the parts to add the distibitor take off...(yes, it goes where the distribtor would go) or cheaper to repair the old lucus.
