I am trying to help a friend to get his Ford 4600 diesel tractor started. He has put new battery in tractor. It will turn over, but no start. I am not real familiar with diesels. Is there a trouble shooting procedure to start with? It has a loader on it, so its hard to trailer to a dealer for service. Thanks, Bob

I know this has never happened to anybody else, and it could only happen to me, and all that, but one time I pulled the shut off knob and without my noticing it the cable came loose from the lever on the side of the pump. When I pushed the knob back in the lever stayed in the 'off' position. It took forever and almost killing the battery before I stumbled on what was wrong.

Bill has an excellent reply; just to add, the diesel has to crank at least 200 rpm to start. My $.02

first, it must crank normal or "fast" or it will not start,, so if its barely turning over, forget it.. if it spins over ok.. then it must get fuel or it will not fire.. did the exhaust smoke any at all?? loosen a coupling nut at the top of the injector and then crank it over,, if no fuel dribbles out, it will not start.. DO NOT have your hands near the coupler nut as if you get any diesel accidently injected in you skin, the medical treatment is AMPUTATION!!!, so stay 6 inches from all pressurized diesel lines at aleast while cranking or running.. if no dribble of diesel out of the lines, check to see that the fuel cut off is not stuck or disconnected at the injector pump, that the filter is not stopped up and the tank is no off or stopped up.... and last but not least that their is fuel in the tank..Bill

Thanks Bill
You have given me some tips to follow up on. It might be a while until I get to the tractor, I will post the outcome. Bob
