I looked at a '68 3000 today with an hour meter reading 19000 hours. First off, I've never seen a meter that high, but even more unusual is that the owner's family has had the tractor since the early '70s and has only used it to hall hay, or pull a mower. He said they never used it daily to generate this many hours.

The meter is currently not working. He said he has replaced the tach cable twice and it has broken both times.

If I understand correctly, the tach and the hour meter are totally independent. Has anyone ever heard of an electrical problem that could have caused the meter to run even when the tractor was not?

The tractor is currently 12 volt. I don't know enough to know if that is how it came from the factory.

The following apply to the stock 'proofmeter' found on a 3000. The tach and hour meter are driven by the same cable, although either can fail on its own. Electricity plays no role in the operation of either the tach or hourmeter. The hourmeter doesn't have enough digits to read 19,000 hrs, the righthand digit is tenths of an hour; the most it can read is 9999.9hr. All 3000's are 12V Neg ground.

I told the seller the same thing before I went to look at it (I didn't think it could show 19000 hours.) But I could swear now that I looked at it, and double checked when I was there that it showed 19xxx.x hours. The tractor had some ice on it, and I did not remove it, but I was sure he was right. I will call him again and have him check a third time.
