861D Brake Shoe Removal?

I am trying to replace the brake shoes on my 1958 861D and I can't get the anchor pins out of the backing plates. The Ford manual says to remove an anchor pin retaining clip and the anchor pin will come out. My anchor pins have a groove cut in them but there is no retaining clip. I tried to drive the pins out from both directions but they won't budge. There is a stamped metal bracket that has holes in it for the heads of the pins to protrude through. This bracket is located in between the brake shoes and appears to be held in place by 5 of the large bolts that retain the axle and backing plate to the axle housing so I removed the 5 bolts and tried to remove the bracket but now I see that the bracket is spot welded to the backing plate. I can't figure out how to get the anchor pins out so that I can replace the brake shoes. Can anyone help me? By the way, the anchor pins are located at the 9 o'clock position so I have an upper and a lower shoe instead of a front and rear shoe.

When I replaced the axle seals on my 641, I had the same problem with the brake shoes.

Here's a link to my ramblings, including how I pressed the pins out using a vise and a couple sockets.
-and yes, you should have upper/lower shoes, not front/back.

Those pins can be a bear, but they have to be driven in or out. I had one that was a real booger, but once out and cleaned, it will fit right. I used an old deepwell socket that was slightly smaller than the pins and drove it out using it as a punch. I didn't even have to break out the torch.

Thanks guys. I will get a couple of sockets and a BIG C-clamp and see if I can squeeze them out.
