Just picked up a 641 with the 134 cid gasoline engine at an auction.I just now noticed it has a 12 volt battery ( negative ground), 12 volt generator ( not an alternator) but the coil is marked "6 volt. All cables are the size for a 12 volt system. At idle, the wire to the coil shows 12.8 volt. I think this is not good for the coil. Should I put in a 12 volt coil, a coil with a built in resistor, or a voltage reducer? If I put on a 12 volt coil will the points and capacitor "live"? Thanks, AJ

AJ, You're right, a 6 volt coil will not live long on a 12 volt system. My suggestion: wire it like the 12V 2000 to 5000 gas tractors 1965/. Use a resistance wire from the key switch to the coil (or an external resistor) to drop the voltage to approximately 6 or 7 volts) Run a second wire from the starter solenoid to the coil (no resistor) to feed the coil battery voltage while cranking for better starting.

Texadian,
Thanks for the reply. Was this set up common for the gasoline engine? The tractor has a fuel gage but no ammeter. It does have a generator light. Since I just picked it up yesterday, I'm not sure about most of it yet. The head lights have been disconnected and has no switch. The original has been replaced with a starter switch. How can I determine the required voltage for the lights? I'm sure this great board will hear from me again once I start to work on this one. Thanks AJ

I have a 63 2000, converted when I got it. Lights disconnected. They were the original 6volt. Took one down to local auto parts store, found a match(12volt). Ran a hot off ignition switch to a light switch. Then hot to one side of light, and grounded the other side. I had a 6volt coil too, but I converted to electronic ignition, put in a 12 volt coil with built in resister.
