ID 871 vs 4000?

When the numbers are rusted away on the ID pad on a ford tractor, is there another way to tell which tractor I have? It was advertised as a 1964 4000, and the decals on the hood are for a 4000, but the sheet metal looks like the 801 series except the breather and muffler look like the picture I saw of a 62 4000. I can find the number 71, and below that about 5 numbers that appear to be part of a serial number on the id pad and it's outfitted like an 871D but I'm not smart enough to know for sure if this is an 871. Did the early 4000 series have the position/draft lever on the main case right side like I've read the 801 series had? The tractor is painted blue and grey (with what's left of the ford red under the blue). I would assume the service manuals are different and I want to get the right one. If it would help I could get some pictures and get them scanned I'm sure. I don't mind scraping the grease and oil off of somewhere or taking pictures of certain parts if I had a clue what to look for. I'd hate to have to trailer this thing to the local ford dealer just to get a manual.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Bob

Chances are if the block casting # is conn6015 that it is a 4000.

Bob,

Try this site. From a high level, the first thing I'd check would be the top of the front hood. 8xx series had the emblem. My '64 4000 has a half-round piece of chrome.
Otherwise, all but the sheetmetal on mine is painted blue, instead of red, and the sheetmetal itself is still grey.

Good Luck!
Tommy D.
