Hi All,
I recently purchased a Ford 2310 with a 3 cyl. Diesel engine. The guy I bought it from said it had a Perkins diesel engine. The engine has Ford stamped into side of the block. I didn’t argue with the guy but I thought the American and European made 3 cylinder Fords had original Ford designed engines. Did Ford use the Perkins diesel in their tractors other than the Fordsons? I was just curious because I haven’t found any information on this. The shop manual I purchased for this tractor states that the engine make is OWN, what ever that means. Any info will be appreciated. Rick H. Ga.

I and others have posted how to decode "unit numbers" to get actual build dates, check the archives. As tractors don't have title like cars it may have been bought new in '86. Engine itself will have an assembly date stamped on front cover mounting flange just behind front cover, should be within 30 days of tractor final assembly date.

While Ford was building 9N's, 2N's and 8N's from '39 to '52 in Highland Park Michingan, Ford of England was building the E27N Fordson Major; the engine was made buy Perkins. While Ford was building the NAA and all its descendants in MI from 53 to 64, Ford of England was building Fordson Majors and Fordson Dextas in Dagenham England. The Dexta 3 cylinder diesel engine was made by Perkins to Ford's specs.
TimK is right for all 1965 and newer on Ford Tractors, the engines are made in Basildon no matter where the tractors are assembled. The Basildon Ford tractor engine is still being manufactured today with the same cylinder bore sizes and the same flywheel housing bolt circle that was used when the family was launched in 1964.

Ford built the engine. I guess just because they used a CAV injection pump and filter head, folks assume it is a Perkins engine. He's not the first to make that mistake.

Thanks for the info. The guy also said the tractor was a 1986 model. The serial number has an 86 in it so I guess he assumed it was an 86 model. Based on the serial number I believe it is a 1983 or 84 model. However, the tractor is in excellent condition so I am not going to hold that against him. Thanks. Rick H. Ga.

Just to add, the Ford 3 cyl. engines were all made in Basildon England as I recall, regardless of where the tractor was eventually assembled. My $.02

Were both gas and diesel Ford engines made in England? I have a 1965 4500 TLB. Where were the 134 and 172 gas engines made?
