I have always had a love for tractors but unfortunately never had the opportunity to own one until now. My grandfather after his death left his tractor (Ford 6600) available to us. It has been in his butler building not being used for the past 10 years. The tractor has very low hours and looks brand new. Other than driving a Ford 3200 while bush hogging my deer fields, I know nothing about tractors. The tractor will not crank because the battery is dead. Other than buying a new battery what else should I do or consider? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am from Alabama, married, two sweet girls and Love Jesus.

ironically with a new battery, it will probably start, if its a diesel...

but you should really change the oil and filter using a good grade diesel oil... wallmart sells delo 400 15w-40 at 6.17 a gallon... or delvac 1300 or rotella t.. all are ch-4 rated and or ci-4 rated for extended oil changes.. the oil is about two gallons without the filter or 9 quarts with a filter.. at standard motocraft 1 filter will work...
next drain the fuel tank and fuel filters and add fresh fuel.. change rebleed the filters and add a new battery.... and then grease all the fittings, drain and replace the antifreeze with a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water... and your good for another couple of years... you can change the hydraulic filter and check the level of it and the power steering then you know those are good as well.. its a great tractor with about 70 pto horsepower..

fyi..
fuel tank is 16.6 gallons
radiator is 26 pts..
pwr steering is 4.6 pts
tans/rearend is 56 qts..

What about the PTO on this tractor? Are their different size attachment mechanisms depending on the tractor? Or is this a standardized item? A friend of mine said he didn't think his 5' bush hog would work with this tractor because the PTO attachment was larger? Does this make any sense?

actually it will work.. as the 540 pto is a standard.. only problem is that some 5' pto shafts are a little short when used on the larger tractors, but usually work fine. i have a 6700 and a 5 foot shredder and yes it works fine.
some 6600 have dual speed pto.. 1000 and 540..you will need the 540 setting(part) that comes with the tractor. Most 6600's were single speed 540 pto shafts only... so either way , you would be ok..

the tractor has lots of power so that if you hit rocks and stumps, the pto shaft will eventially twist.. where on a smaller tractor, the engine would slow down or even die.

and a 5 foot bushhog will be narrower than the wheel base of a 6600.. which is usually about 7 feet.. which means you cant shred right up against a fence or trees... i know...
