I just replaced the head gasket on my 4000 diesel. Now that I have it all back together I noticed the fuel tank has a small leak underneath. I guess from years of condensation in the tank it started to rust from the inside out. All I did was wire brush the dirt off the outside. Should of left the dirt on! So, my question is, short of replacing th tank, has anyone been sucessful at patching one from the outside? I was thinking of trying J B Weld. Thanks for any help.

John, I used a product called; K-POXY epoxy putty on the fuel tank of my 2000 Ford in 1995. It's still holding. This was after about a day of taking all the precautions and attempting to braze the tank. CAUTION!!! APPLING HEAT TO A FUEL TANK CAN BE DEADLY. The brazing was successful in resecuring the mounting flanges where they were starting to come loose, but I could never get the fuel to stop seeping. I finally gave up, buried my pride and opted for the epoxy putty. I have never used JB Weld, but would guess that this is a simular product. K-POXY is made by ; McKIM Group, 225 Riverview Ave. Waltham,MA. 02254

Hi John , I have used J.B.Weld to seal fuel tanks and it does hold , how long I don't know for sure . First I usually put a small sheet metal screw with a plastic sealing washer in the pinhole and then seal with the J.B.Weld . Thanks Tony Jacobs

Hi John, You might want to try Seal-All. It comes in a tube like model airplane glue. Hardware stores often have it, and sometimes auto parts stores. It is one of the few sealants that's impervious to fuel. And unless the leak is a gusher, it can be patched while the tank is leaking. I've used it numerous times over the years on gasoline, but I should tell you I've never tried it on diesel fuel. Never the less, I think it will work. Some, but not all, epoxies are fuel resistant. I've never tried JB Weld on fuel, so I can't speak to that.

At some point you may want to remove the tank an treat is with "slosh compound" tank sealer. There are posts about it in some of the forums. Good luck...Al English

I have had very good luck with the slosh type tank sealer, but you have to take the tank off for that.

I have a 4000 Ford Diesel with rust in tank. Do you know what I could use to coat the inside of the fuel tank and where I could get the same? thanks
