I just bought a 1968 2000 3 cylinder gas. I don't know a thing about them. I think it needs a carburator rebuild, has a holley carb. Are they easy to rebuild as the old Marvels. The tractor is colded blooded, you can pull the choke out as far as it will go and it will not make dark smoke. The guy I bought it from tells me all 2 and 3000 gasers are that way. Problem 2: I drove the tractor on his dirt driveway and it steered good, going straight but when I got it home I drove on the blacktop and it goes where ever it wants, you can't go half throttle. I would not drive it down the road because it might go in the other lane. It has power-steering. I might mention that if you start steering to right when standing, you can let go of the steering wheel and it will continue to keep turning to the right tell it hits the stops. I did notice that the right steering cylinder has alot of wear in the ball joint. Would that cause the wandering?It looks to me like it would have to replace the whole cylinder or can you just replace the part with the worn out ball joint?

I tried to rebuild my Holley carb on a 3 cyc 3000 and could never get it to work right. I finally replaced it with a Zenith carb and it was like night and day. It cost me about $290 for the Zenith but I had spent almost $100 on kits & parts trying to get the Holley to work. Good Luck with your project.

Your immediate problem is the steering. You have to determine if there is any play in the components and if the power steering is working right. You can replace just the ball joint end of the cylinders (note: complete cylinders are VERY expensive). You may want to rebuild both cylinders. There are kits available for this a NH. 2. You may have a poblem with the steering column itself in terms of getting the fluid to the correct cylinder (note: there is a right cylinder and a left cylinder), but I would bet its a bad cylinder. As far as wandering is concerned, that has nothing to do with the power steering inasmuch as the tie rods are connected directly to the steering arms. Wandering is caused by loose ball joints, worn axle pivot pin coupled with worn radius arm balls or pins, or the steering box is worn allowing the steering arms to have too much play. You just have to start taking those components apart to see where the play is, unless you can eyeball the exact location. My $.02

Hello,
The Holley carbs are a pain to rebuild but it can be done. This carb has a accelerator pump which I thought was unusual and lots of small parts. Seems like there was a plunger that had to slide freely and mine had to be polished. Good luck Mark

updraft carburators where used to keep from pouring raw gas in the engine.. so therefore..you will ALWAYS have to give the choke a quick pull and push lots of time on even warm tractors.. but this design is important on vehicles that sit alot..

as to the steering,, it must be ajusted to have 1/4 to 1/2 inch toein... meaning if you measure from the back off the front tires. and then to the front of the front tires, you should see about a half inch less in the front measurement..

and yes..with wear, these tractors will wonder on the road... but they are designed for max effieciency at a ground speed of 5 miles an hour in the field.. if not 3 miles an hour.. even the tire design is maxed for 5 mph... which is usually 4th gear low range at about 1900 rpm... on most tractors.. wide open high range is strictly for moving from job to job...

look carefully at the steering and see which tierod ends are loose or where the play comes from and you can slowly repair it to new condition.... Bill
