Hello, I purchased a 1960 model 861 ford powermaster 4 cyl gas tractor that had been converted to 12 volt system. Problem is points burn up. The resistor to distributor voltage reading is 12-13 volts, should the resistor not reduce the voltage to 6 volts? The tractor has a gm alternator and a ford 12 volt coil. Thanks for your help. I replaced the resistor but voltage is still 12-13 volts. Don (Mi)

With the distributor points CLOSED, read the voltage between the positive and negative coil terminals. It should be around 6 to 8 volts. If this voltage is 12 to 13 volts, then the resistor isn't installed correctly. If it's zero, your points are open.

Where is the resistor in the wiring,it should be before the coil.
