The truck is a 1988 ford f250 4x4 w/ 351 engine auto
I am having a problem with oil pressure. a weeks a ago the oil pressure would always read BELOW L(LOW) and as it revs it would go to the normal area. So it almost worked like a tachometer. so i figure it was just censor. So, i had it look at by an unlce of mine and he changed the censor. Now with the censor changed it read always normal on the truck for the first 15 minutes only on COLD start. then once the engine would warm up it would start acting up, but when you put it in neutral or park(which woudl take COMPLETE load off truck) the pressure would go back to normal for another 20 minutes AFTER the warmed up, and about 10 minutes after that it would totalty read low at idle always and then goto normal as accelerating. and the whole time no matter good oil pressure or bad the ENGINE light would be on until you tapped the gas. but the thing that is throwing em off the most is that the second that the pressure starts acting up(20 minutes after a COLD start) the engine will start hesitating. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help.

I would start by hooking up a mechanical oil pressure guage (one that has small diameter tubing running from the engine to the gauge). This will tell you if you really have a pressure problem or if there is something wrong with your electical system. Can you hear the lifters rattling when the gauge is reading low? If not, I bet your problem is in the electrical system.

If it's an electrical problem that is causing the erratic oil pressure, it (the electrical problem) could also be messing up the computer causing the engine to run poorly. If you really do have an oil pressure problem (verified by the mechanical gauge) then the lack of oil to moving parts could be causing the engine to sieze up which would make it run poorly.

Your symptom is exactly what you see with severely worn bearings. A badly worn oil pump can also cause the same symptom. I agree with the other post, test the oil pressure with a mechanical guage to be sure that it is really an oil pressure problem. If the oil pressure really is low, try changing the oil and filter and use a single weight oil at least one grade thicker than what you have been using. i.e. if you are using 10W-30, try straight 40 weight and see if the pressure come up noticeably. If so, looks like a rebuild is in order in the near future. The heavier oil might get you by for a while. I wood also look at replacing/rebuilding the oil pump to see if I could get the pressure up some, but if the bearings are severely worn, not much to do except heavier oil until rebuild.
