A friend of mine has a 68 ford 4000 that he ran low on oil and now it has a knock. He thinks it just needs to have new main bearings put in it. Can this be done by just dropping the oil pan and working in the new bearings in? I am asking because I am thinking of buying the tractor the way it is and doing the work myself.

Thanks,
Andy

Can it be done, yes Should it be done, probily not. More than likely if it ran without oil more than just the bearing are chewed up. If you want a quick fix then that will do it but I would suspect that after you drop the pan you will find the crankshaft is well scratched into. At that point you should pull the engine and send the crank to be ground/polished depending on what the machineshop decides. They will then tell you what size under bearings you will need to get it back like new. Might also be a good idea to check the cam bearings although they don't have as heavy of a load on them.
