I am restoring a '64 4000 diesel. I removed the head and found that there were no sleeves in the cylinders. All of the 800-900 series that I have worked on had sleeved cylinders. I thought the 4000 would also have sleeves. One of the cylinders is badly worn. Did some of the 4000's have sleeveless engines? What is the difference between 800-900 series and the 4000? Should I replace the block since the cylinder has a deep groove caused by the wrist pin of a piston, or can I bore the block, insert dry sleeves, and return to the standard pistons? Are the pistons the same in the sleeveless engines? Any information will be appreciated.

As I understand it the 4 Cyl - 4000 and 2000 series had "parent bore blocks". That means no sleeves. Mine was sleeveless S/N 43109. All that it needed was new pistons and rings. Didn't even need oversized. Sorry yours is not in good shape. The rest of it I will leave to the experts.
