The 3 pt hitch came out on the 1939 Ford 9N. It
was a handshake deal between Henry Ford and Harry
Ferguson, which later was a big lawsuit. Harry
Ferguson pantented the 3 pt hitch in either 1925,
or 1929 I forgot which year. He put it on some
David Brown tractors in the mid thirties before
turning his back on David Brown and going with Henry Ford.

I'm not sure exactly when, but Ferguson, later of Massey-Ferguson patented a 3ph and licensed it to Ford. The question prompted me to look for information on this site. According to an article (click on 'Articles' for a list of very good ones) only Ford, Ferguson and a few other tractors had a non-proprietary hitch during the late '50's. The invention undoubtedly was much earlier.

As I understand, the original purpose of the 3ph was to reduce tractor overturns due to sudden draft increases. That may have been the patentable idea, but the effect was to get rid of proprietary implements according to the article.

There probably will be more informed responses than mine. So I'll raise an add-on history question. I wonder if the 3ph license from Ferguson to Ford was to Ford Motors or to Ford the son who made Fordson tractors until his company was bought by Ford the motor company? I also wonder who owned Fordson when the tractors were still produced into the 50's at the same time as regular Ford tractors?
