I am looking at a mid 60's 4000 Ford. It has a 3 cyl gas motor, which I have no experience with!! Any comments on this engine, plus or minus...This tractor has had very light useage, low hours... Thanks to all.

I have the same tractor in the 70's version. Ford went to the 3 cylinder 2000 and 4000 in 65 while improving and updating the overall tractor (looks included). Don't worry about the 3 cylinder engine. It has been a good engine for Ford in the 2XXX, 3XXX, and 4XXX tractors.

Some will be concerned that it is a gas burner. Depends on what you are going to do with it. If you are going to give it a daily diet of hard pulling, your operating cost with a diesel would be lower. But, I expect you can buy this tractor for a lot less than a comparable diesel as there is low demand for gas tractors that size. You will be able to buy years of gas with the money you save if it is only moderatly used on the weekends as many of us now do.

Finally, the 4000 (45 - 52hp depending on where measured and who you ask) is big enough to do a lot of work. It will nicely handle a 3-16 bottom plow, 6 ft harrow or 6 ft bushhog in most places. Yet the tractor (if it has power steering) is small enough to be "handy". I also use a cub, a 601, and a JD720D. If I could only keep one to get work done on a weekend size farm it might just be the 4000 (sentimental and nostalgic value excluded).
