I drained the fluid out of the hydraulics of my Ford 640 this weekend. There was quite a bit of water (maybe more than a gallon). Put in the oild that they sold me at the local TSC store for Fords. Drawbar still does not raise. Tried priming the pump (blowing air into the hole to check the hydraulic oil level). No luck. Took out the valve near the top/front of hydraulic case. A little more water came out, but pump still not working. Hoping it is just a stuck valve internally and not a bad pump. I have on order the gasket and o-ring set so I can open up the hydraulics. Welcome further advice.

Thanks in advance

Larry H.

Larry,

I have primed my 640 pump by removing the pipe plug on the top/front of the hydraulic pump and then starting the engine. If/when it catches, you may get an oil bath! Be ready to stop the engine quickly! You can also back out the plug until it is just holding by a fraction of a thread and let it leak out the air.

Dave, Thanks, I will give it try this evening. I tried last night it with some air pressure in the hole to check the oil level for the hydraulics, but that did not work.

As I mentioned back on 11-14 when you posted, it is possibly the cam follower pin. If the tractor is indoors, you can remove the lift cover while you are waiting on the o-ring set. One man can remove the cover, although it is quite heavy. It takes two to reset it however, unless you use a hoist, etc., as you have to set it precisely to avoid messing up the gasket and o-rings and keep the bolt holes lined up. You may be able to remove the cam follower pin and then just turn it around and put the same one back, that is if you can't find a new one within your schedule, and if no one has done that to your tractor previously. If that doesn't make sense now, I think it will when you look at it. Only slight wear on it will directly adversely affect your lift. You may need a helper to provide backing while you drift the cam f.p. out to keep from damaging anything. HTH. P.s., I posted a similar response earlier that doesn't seem to have really posted. If a duplicate shows up, I apologize.

Phil, Thanks, I tried bleeding the pump this evening but nothing. I do have the Ford shop manual, and it appears the next step is into get into the lift.I have ordered the cam pin, gaskets, and o-rings. The hydraulics, as well as the pump, had water in it, which I am sure did not help any...and I assume caused a valve to stick. I will let you know in about a week and a half if the operation was successful. Thanks for the advice.

Larry
