I am replacing my vertical exhaust manifold on the 3000 diesel with a horizontal exhaust. The original vertical exhaust manifold has one 1/4" bolt that looks like it goes through the manifold into the head for the bolt closest to the exhaust opening for the muffler. This looks original. The other bolts for the manifold are the usual 9/16" or 5/8" size. Is this 1/4" small bolt the correct size? I am afraid that I will break off the small bolt. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Recently I removed and replaced the vertical exhaust manifold on my diesel 3000. There were no odd sized bolts. They were all the same diameter. Give them some lubriplate when you return them, they wont sieze as easily next time. Not that you need my two cents. Trust everything Bern has to say on this or any topic, He is the real mechanic here.

I have seen this twice before, both times it was a 3/8" bolt that the head had rusted severely. The head of the bolt looked normal, just undersized. I think the proximity of that bolt to the exhaust outlet exposes it to higher temperatures than the rest. You may have to cut the head off and remove it with a stud puller after the manifold is off. Hope this helps!

All of the original bolts to hold that thing on were 3/8". Not sure where the 1/4" came from. Might wish to investigate further. Possibly someone heli-coiled that hole????

Bern, I am referring to the head size, not the diameter of the bolt. The one bolt in question is very long and extends out past the outlet to the muffler. Thanks.

Seems to me that one of the bolts is longer than the others, but it is still 3/8" diameter (9/16" wrench size).
